At difficult times of cravings, euphoric recall, and withdrawal while quitting nicotine can be overcome by remembering the reasons we're quitting and the benefits we're already enjoying from doing this. It doesn't take a long time away from nicotine for the body to start eliminating the poisons it has absorbed. We can have some gratitude for that. Within two weeks breathing will become easier and we'll be able to exercise longer and harder without getting out of breath. Food will taste and smell better and we'll be minus the nagging guilt that comes from lighting up or putting a pinch in the mouth knowing it can kill you eventually. In time the body will repair itself from the effects of using tobacco and we'll have the same potentially longer life spans as non-smokers.

We can have some gratitude for that, also. A helpful technique to use during the process of quitting tobacco is to keep a written 'gratitude list' that contains the advantages of not using tobacco. This list should be started before the user quits, and added to during the process of quitting. Reading it when you're having cravings or feeling helpless can give you a quick burst of inspiration to continue on with the goal of quitting.

Some examples of the advantages of not smoking are these:
- clothes smell better
- finances improve
- less chance of cancer
- less chance of heart attacks
- less chance of other diseases
- teeth and fingers are not yellow
- constant coughing is eliminated
- cholesterol count goes down
- restaurants offer quicker and better seating
- babies are born healthier
- productivity at work increases
- sperm count increase
- emotion better controlled
